Kennedy takes opening round of JSTS speed week at Sioux Center

Sioux Center, Iowa (July 18, 2012) – The Forbes Meats Jackson Speedway Touring Series opened its 2012 speed week this past Wednesday night at the Sioux Speedway in Sioux Center, Iowa.  A fantastic field of 29 cars pulled into the pit area for the nights racing action.  Winning the 20-lap $2,000 to win feature event was Lou Kennedy, Jr., of Winnipeg Canada.

At the drop of the green flag it was Kennedy getting the early from his inside pole starting position. Billy Alley, Lincoln NE would grab the second spot with Kaley Gharst, Decatur IL, getting the third spot.  On lap three Gharst would be challenge by Thomas Kennedy, Winnipeg Canada.  Gharst would hold Kennedy off as the race continued on.  On lap seven the races first caution flag came out when Troy Manteufel, St. Peter MN, spun in turn two.  On the restart the battle for the second position would heat up as Alley, Thomas Kennedy, and Gharst would race hard of the position.  They would continue that battle for the next two laps when Alley would pull away from the battle, but on the next lap Gharst would catch Alley for the second spot, as Brian Brown, Grain Valley MO, would battle with Kennedy for the fourth spot.  With Lou Kennedy, Jr. up front and Gharst in second, Brown would move into the third spot getting by Alley.  On lap twelve the second and final caution came out when John Lambertz, Sioux Falls SD, had motor problems and slowed on the front straightaway.   On the restart as the field raced through turns one and two Gharst would get by Lou Kennedy, Jr., for the lead but as they raced into turn three Kennedy would get the lead back through turns three and four.  As the next few laps went by Lou Kennedy, Jr. pulled away from Gharst, and went on to take the opening night of the JSTS speed week.  Kaley Gharst took second followed by Brian Brown, Billy Alley, and Thomas Kennedy.

The B Feature was won by Dylan Peterson, Hartford SD, with the heat race wins going to Billy Alley, Troy Manteufel, Austin McCarl, Altoona IA, and Kaley Gharst.

The Jackson Speedway Touring Series now moves on to the Redwood Speedway in Redwood Falls MN, tonight for round two, with action moving to the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont MN Friday night, and concludes Saturday night at Jackson Speedway with running of the 34th Annual Jackson Sprint Car Nationals.
