Winds Don’t Damper Season Opener At Jackson Speedway

JACKSON, MN (May 22) Despite the best efforts of Mother Nature to blow away everything not bolted down, the 2010 regular season opened at Jackson Speedway Saturday night with several familiar faces returning to Victory Lane to open the new season at the historic half-mile facility.

In the Jackson Speedway Hornet class, Nate Coopman of Mankato, MN took the opening feature win of the season, while in the Hobby Stocks, Dustin Larsen of Lakefield, MN would earn the feature checkers to open the season. The IMCA Sport Mod feature saw Dan Paplow of Dundee, MN,  take the checkered flag, while a familiar face with a new number, Frank Phipps of Everly, IA, opened the 305 Sprint Season with a victory.  The Performance Center of Estherville IMCA Stock Car class continued the excitement right where they left off last season, with lots of slicing and dicing before Elijah Zevenbergen of Ocheyedan, IA, claimed the checkered flag, and in the 20-lap Jackson Speedway Touring Series 360 Sprint feature, Gregg  Baker of Sioux Falls, SD held off the field for the win, while Joe Riedel and Chad Meyer rounded out the top three.

With seven hornets on hand, the heat race win went to Amanda Kaltved of Estherville, IA, but the Feature event would be all Coopman, as the Mankato hotshoe took an early lead and never relinquished it for the win.

The Car Toyz of Marshall IMCA Hobby Stocks featured a field of 15 cars for the season opener on Saturday night. Heat race wins went to John Briggs of Calumet, IA and Dustin Larson of Lakefield, MN, before the feature win would go to Larson.

The IMCA Sport Modifieds brought16 cars to the feature through two heats, which saw Dan Paplow of Dundee, MN win the first heat and Jason Fisher of Lakefield, MN taking the second heat race win. In the feature event, Paplow and Fisher would duel back and forth several times to the delight of the fans, before Paplow foud the line in the late stages of the race to earn the victory.

All season long in 2009, the IMCA Stock Car class provided plenty of excitement and action at the Jackson Speedway, and if Saturday’s season opener was any sample of what’s to come, the upcoming season will be a wild one! A dozen warriors took to the track in two heat races, with Elijah Zevenbergen of Ocheyedan, IA, taking one heat victory and Jeffrey Larson of Lakefield, MN., earning the win in the second heat. It would take a couple of yellow flags in the “A” feature event for spinouts on the windblown slick track, but at the end, Elijah Zevenbergen pulled off a sweet pass in a drag race down the back straightaway with Luke Sathoff in the late stages of the race to record the victory.

305 Sprints

With 10 cars on hand for the 305 sprint portion of the program, heat victories were earned by the 75 of Tommy Barber of Sioux Falls, SD and the 4s of Frank Phipps of Everly, IA. When it came time for the feature, the new look for Phipps was the same as past seasons – FAST. Phipps, now piloting the 4s in place of his familiar #42, took the early lead in the feature and never had to look back, even despite a late charge by Barber and Ryan Voss in the closing circuits.
