Jackson Minnesota (May 30, 2009) The ASA Sanctioned Jackson Speedway hosted it longest running annual event this past Saturday night. The 32nd Annual University of Okoboji Race Night sponsored by State Bank of Fairmont MN and Jackson Sports of Jackson. Winning the nights feature events were Jack Dover, Springfield NE, Jackson Speedway Touring Series US Army 360 Sprints; Casey Friedrichsen, Arthur IA, Napa of Windom 305 Sprints; Jake Masters, Graettinger IA, Performance Center IMCA Stock Cars; Josh Ruby, Lakota IA, Bohls Small Engine and Marine Repair B Modifieds; Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, Loosbrock Digging Services Hobby Stocks; and Nate Coopman, Mankato MN, Yellow Book Hornets.
Two different drivers led in the 20-lap JSTS 360 Sprint car feature event. At the start it was Chad Meyer, Sioux Falls SD, getting the early lead from his inside row one starting position. Jack Dover would get the second spot with Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls SD, getting the third position. The leaders would race in this order through the first seven laps of the event with Dover closing in on Meyer, as the two needled their way through lap traffic. On the seventh lap the caution came out when Lee Grosz, Harwood ND, spun coming out of turn four. On the restart, Dover was able to make the pass on Meyer coming out of turn two. Dover would complete the lap when the caution would soon wave over the speedway again when Shawn Van Wyhe, Rock Rapids IA, came to a stop on the back straightaway. On the restart, Dover kept the field behind him as Meyer maintained the second spot and Bakker third. As the race went on Dover opened up a rather comfortable lead on the field, and when the checkered flag flew it was Jack Dover picking up the win. He was followed by Chad Meyer, Gregg Bakker, Jake Peters, Sioux Falls SD, and Mark Toews, Spirit Lake IA. Winning the heat races were Gregg Bakker, Jack Dover, and Chad Meyer.
The 15-lap 305 Sprint Car feature race was led start to finish by Casey Friedrichsen. At the start of the race it was Friedrichsen getting the lead from his outside row one starting spot. Mike Blomstrom, Ft. Dodge IA, got the second spot with Russell Wiese, Lake Park IA, the third position. On lap two Wiese would slide back in the field, as Bruce Anderson, Trimont moved into third. On lap three Anderson would challenge Blomstrom for the second position. As the field completed that lap the caution came out when Dan Jorgensen, Ringsted IA, spun in turn one. On the restart, Friedrichsen would maintain the number one spot with Blomstrom in second and Anderson third. On lap six the battle for the second spot heated up as Blomstrom, Anderson, and Wiese were challenging one another for the spot. The next lap saw Anderson claim the second spot with Wiese in third and Blomstrom back to the fourth position. One more caution on lap nine for debris slowed the action, but when the checkered flag flew it was Casey Friedrichsen taking the win followed by Russell Wiese, Ryan Voss, Okoboji IA, Bruce Anderson, and Frank Phipps, Everly IA. Heat race winners were Casey Friedrichsen and Devin Friedrichsen, Arthur IA.
The 15-lap Stock Car feature race was worth the price of admission alone, as it was a three car race for the win, and claiming victory by a mere few inches was Jake Masters. At the start of the race, it was Roger Verdoorn, Sibley IA, getting the lead with Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN, the third spot and Jerry Coopman, Mankato MN, the third spot. On lap two the battle for the lead heated up as Verdoorn was challenged by Schroeder, meanwhile, Jake Masters was challenging Coopman for third. At the end of the third lap the race was slowed by a caution, and on the restart it was a five car battle for the number one stop as Elijah Zevenbergen, Ocheydan IA, joined the top four leaders for a battle for the lead. When the field came around to complete the fifth lap it was Jake Masters the leader, as Verdoorn was in the second spot and Schroeder third. Two cautions on laps seven and eight slowed the race, but race leader Jake Masters kept the field behind him, as the field jockeyed for position. One more caution on lap twelve bunched the field up for the final restart, and again Masters maintain the lead, but now Jeffrey Larson, Rushmore MN, would move into the second spot. When the checkered flag was flying the battle out of turn four was set between, Masters, Larson and Schroeder. At the line it was Jake Masters winning by inches over Jeffrey Larson. Trent Schroeder was half a car length behind in third followed by Elijah Zevenbergen and Jerry Coopman. Heat winners were Jerry Coopman, Luke Sathoff, Jackson MN, and Trent Schroeder.
It was a caution filled twelve lap B
Modified feature event. At the start it was Josh Ruby getting the lead with Ben
Ruby, Lakota IA, getting the second spot and Nick Dieter, Brewster MN, getting
third spot. There would be numerous cautions in the first five laps of the
race, but Josh Ruby would maintain the lead keeping the field behind him. As
the cautions slowly took cars from the field, Dan Paplow, Dundee MN, raced in
the second spot with, Greg Sidles, Emmetsburg IA, the third spot. The leaders
would race in that order caution free through the end of the race, and at the
end it was Josh Ruby picking up the win followed by Dan Paplow, Matthew Looft,
Swea City IA, would get by Sidles for third, Greg Sidles took fourth with Mel
Halverson, Jackson MN, fifth. Heat wins went to Tim Rupp, Josh Ruby, and Greg
Sidles.
Two different drivers led in the 12-lap Hobby Stock feature event. At the
start, it was Justin Nehring taking the lead, with Chad Krug the second spot and
Curt Fothergill, Fenton IA, the third position. While working on the seventh
lap race leader Justin Nehring would spin coming out of turn four bringing out
the caution. That gave the restart lead to Chad Krug. Krug however was not
able to hold off Dan Strandberg who would move into the number one spot.
Strandberg would be slowed two more times by caution flags but would hold off
the field and go on to take the win. Chad Krug had to settle for second with
Jerry Gronewold, Worthington MN, third, followed by Curt Fothergill, Fenton IA,
and Dustin Larson, Rushmore MN. Heat winners were Justin Nehring, Chad Krug,
and Dan Strandberg.
The six-lap hornet feature was won by Nate Coopman. Cory Flanigan, Storm Lake IA, was second followed by Tyler Manning, Graettinger IA, Megan Lappegard, Estherville IA, and Austin Edwards, Sioux City IA. The heat race was won by Nate Coopman.
Next Saturday will be Jackson Speedway Hall of Famer, Loren Woodke Appreciation Night. All Residence of Lakefield MN, get into the race for free, plus there will be additional purse money for the US Army 360 Sprints. All six classes will be in competition with hot laps at 6:45 and racing to follow.
