Grosz takes two at Jackson, while Friedrichsen, Voss, Tietz,
Coopman, Ahlers, Strandberg and Kaltved also win

Jackson Minnesota (July 4, 2009) – With nearly an inch of rain through the night Friday night and into Saturday morning the ASA Sanctioned Jackson Speedway rolled in the big half mile for the nights big Independence Day celebration. The night featured double features for the Sprint Cars and Stock Cars. Picking up both U.S. Army Sprint Car feature races was Lee Grosz, Harwood ND. Casey Friedrichsen, Arthur IA, and Ryan Voss, Okoboji IA, won the Napa of Windom 305 Sprint Car Features. Ken Tietz, Belle Plaine MN, and Jerry Coopman, Mankato MN, won the Performance Center IMCA Stock Car features. Picking up the Bohl’s Small Engine and Marine Repair B Modifieds Feature was Dan Ahlers, Slayton MN; with the Loosbrock Digging Services Hobby Stock Feature going to Dan Strandberg, Worthington MN, and the Yellowbook Hornet Feature going to Amanda Kaltved, Estherville IA.
In the first of two features for the 360 Sprints, it was Lee
Grosz getting the early lead in the event. Grosz would lead from the drop of
the green flag with Bill Boles, Harris IA, in the second spot and Wade Nygaard,
Fargo ND in the third position. As the race went on Grosz would build up a
comfortable lead on the field as Boles, Nygaard, and Jake Peters, Sioux Falls
SD, all raced in a close pack for second through fourth. When the checkered
flag flew it was Lee Grosz picking up the win followed Bill Boles, Wade Nygaard,
Jake Peters, and Shawn Van Wyhe, Rock Rapids IA. However following the race,
Nygaard did not report to the scale to weigh and was disqualified. That moved
the finishing order up one spot and gave third to Peters followed by Van Wyhe,
and Joe Riedel, Ramona SD.
Two red flags and several cautions slowed action the second feature. At the
start the red came out when Brad Mandery, Sioux Falls SD, got upside down in
turns three and four. Mandery was ok but down for the night. On the start it
was Lee Grosz getting the early lead with Scott Winters, Butterfield MN, getting
the second spot and Mike Young, Hartford SD, getting the third spot. The yellow
flag came out on lap two when Young went off the track in turns one and two.
The restart saw Grosz hold the field off for one lap when the red flag came out
again for Shawn Van Wyhe who took a nasty ride off of turn one. Van Wyhe was
talking with medical personal at the track but was taken to the hospital for a
check-up. On the restart Grosz again kept the field behind him as Winters raced
in second and Gordy Vogelaar raced in third. The leaders raced in this order
until lap seventeen when the caution came out for Winters who had something
break on the rear-end of the car forcing him to stop on the front straightaway.
One more lap would get in following the restart when Joe Riedel, Ramona SD, got
into the wall in turns three and four. The races final caution came on lap
nineteen when Jake Peters slowed coming out of turn four. That set up a two lap
dash for the win. Lee Grosz would hold off the field and go on to pick up his
second feature race of the night. Wade Nygaard was second followed by Gordy
Vogelaar, Bill Boles, and Chad Meyer, Sioux Falls SD. Heat race wins went to
Mike Young, Chad Meyer, and Gordy Vogelaar.
The first 305 Sprint Car feature race went green-white-checkered and was led start to finish by Ryan Voss who picked up the win. Mike Blomstrom, Ft. Dodge IA, was second followed by Jeff Edgington, Sioux Falls SD, Devin Friedrichsen, Arthur IA, and Frank Phipps, Everly IA.
The second 305 Sprint feature race saw a great battle between race winner Casey Friedrichsen and Ryan Voss. Friedrichsen would lead the races first two thirds of the event with Voss right on his tail for most of the trips around the speedway. While working on lap twelve, Voss would make his move around Friedrichsen in turns three and four. Voss would only lead that lap as he slowed coming out of turn four on the next lap and then went to the scale. However there were still two laps in the event, which Friedrichsen led and went on to take the win. Russell Wiese was second followed by Bruce Anderson, Trimont MN, Frank Phipps and Jake Nicosen, Ringsted IA. Heat races were won by Casey Friedrichsen and Ryan Voss.
Two different drivers led in the first 15-lap Stock Car feature race. At the start it was Derek Green, Granada MN, getting the early lead with Jerry Coopman, getting second spot and Jeff McCallum, Mankato MN, getting the third position. The leaders raced in this order for the first six laps when Coopman made his move into the lead coming out of turn four and down the front straightaway. Green would then race in second with McCallum still in the third spot. When the checkered flag flew at the end it was Jerry Coopman picking up the win followed by Derek Green, Jeff McCallum, Ken Tietz, and Jeffrey Larson, Lakefield MN.
The second Stock Car feature race was led start to finish by Ken Tietz. At start of the race, the caution came out when Luke Sathoff, Jackson MN, spun on the back and Jake Masters, Graettinger IA, spun in turn four. On the complete restart, Tietz would grab the early lead with Jerry Coopman the second spot and Troy Woelber, Hull IA, the third spot. On lap three Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN, challenged Woelber for the third spot and two laps later got around him. As the race went on, the battle for the lead heated up among Tietz and Coopman. On lap eight Coopman pulled alongside of Tietz but Tietz was able to maintain the number one spot. On lap nine the caution came out for debris. On the restart, Ken Tietz held off Coopman and went on to take the win. Jerry Coopman was second followed by Jeffrey Larson, Tim Grathwohl, East Chain MN, and Trent Schroeder. Heat races went to Jerry Coopman and Jeffrey Larson.
The 12-lap B Modified feature race went green-white-checkered. At the start, Kyle Steuber, Fairmont MN, got the early lead with Dan Ahlers the second spot and Ben Ruby, Lakota IA, the third spot. The next lap saw Josh Ruby, Lakota IA, get by his brother Ben for the third spot. As the race went on Ahlers would challenge Steuber for the lead several times and was finally able to make the pass stick in turns three and four on lap eleven. When the checkered flag flew it was Dan Ahlers picking up the win followed by Josh Ruby, Kyle Steuber, Eric Kinnetz, Milford IA, and Nick Dieter, Brewster MN. Heat races were won by Matthew Looft, Swea City IA, Nick Deiter, and Josh Ruby.
Three different drivers led in the caution filled, race shortened, Hobby Stock feature. On the start Brandon Bosma, Round Lake MN, got the early lead. He would lead the races first six laps surviving three restarts. On lap seven, Chad Krug moved into the lead when Bosma and Dan Strandberg were battling it out for the lead in turn two. The two of them got too high in turn two allowing several cars to get by. As the caution flags continued to fly, Chad Krug would maintain the lead with Dustin Larson, Rushmore MN, in second. As the race began to wind down, Strandberg would work his way back up to the second spot and when the checkered flag flew it was Dan Strandberg getting the win. Chad Krug had to settle for second. Dustin Larson did cross the finish line third but was disqualified. That moved the finishing order up one spot and gave third to Chad Carlson, Ormsby MN, followed by Chris Harris, Graettinger IA. Heat races went to Chad Krug, John Briggs, Calumet IA, and Chad Carlson.
The six lap Hornet feature was won by Amanda Kaltved who picked up her second feature in a row. Jake Schroeder, Lakefield MN, was second followed Megan Lappegard, Estherville IA, Tyler Manning, Graettinger IA, and Austin Edwards, Sioux City IA. The heat race was won by Jake Schroeder.
This Saturday night the action continues at the Jackson Speedway. There will be a special classic car cruise in, plus the June 27th rained out features for the Hornets, Hobby Stocks and B Mods will be run. Hot laps will be at 6:00 p.m. with racing to follow.
